How to Have a Quiet Time

Why Have a Quiet Time?

  • To enjoy fellowship with God and get to know Him better (Phil. 3:8-10; Matt. 22:37,38).
  • To delight God (Proverbs 15:8b).
  • To discover principles to direct our lives (Psalm 119:105).
  • To develop perspectives on life from God's point of view (Romans 12:2).
It isn’t:
  • to please God
  • to "have a better day"
  • because you "ought to"
  • because God will discipline you if you don't
  • to learn more about God
  • to "have something to share"
  • to grow
It is:
  • to know God
  • to worship God
  • to experience His presence
  • "to be progressing in an intimate knowledge and experience of God's person, presence and power" (John 17:3, Philippians 3:8-10, Deuteronomy 4:29)

Practical Suggestions:

Set aside a regular time each day to spend with God and make it a daily priority. Find a quiet place where you can be alone and free from distractions (Mark 1:35). Come with an attitude of expectancy and a hunger to meet God. (Luke 10:38-42)

Basic Quiet Time Structure
(The following are only suggestions. There is no one way to have a quiet time.)
1. Start with a devotional or something simple that will help you start to focus
2. Spend some time in scripture. (There are a variety of ways listed on this site.)
3. Spend some Time in Prayer (There are a variety of ways listed on this site.)
4. Journal and process through something with the Lord or write about something He’s teaching you
5. Work on Memorizing some scripture and end with prayer

Action Point: Select a definite time and place for your quiet time for each day of the next week. Start with a short period of time that's comfortable for you.
